Private Kitchen Hong Kong Cuisine @ Damansara Utama

Situated in the bustling business district of Uptown Damansara Utama lies an upcoming gem specialising in Hong Kong cuisine for the Chef himself is a Hongkie.  Chef Lam Fai brings to you specially designed menu infused with the Hong Kong touch.  I joined a group of foodies to try out the dishes here and that night, this place became my own Private Kitchen (“Si Fong Choy”) :D

The barley is boiled for hours and it’s not your ordinary barley drink.  It’s been infused (boiled together) with a type of root “Wai San” (arrowroot?) which brings about a nice twist to your ordinary barley drink.  Available in hot or cold, it definitely brought down my body temperature from these scorching hot days.

Ambience of a restaurant/cafe is important to me.  It sets the mood for good relaxation, enjoyment, comfort etc.. to have your meal.  Private Kitchen eludes all of that for it’s clean, spacious and with its simple clean cut design, I settled myself comfortably and looked forward to what’s served that night.

Are you an appetizer lover?  I AM! :D :D Do you scan thru menu’s for appetizers before you start looking at the main meals?  See if this impress you for it did to me and I went like “WOW, I could so just munch on these alone” for I’m a savoury lover person.

This would definitely be a nice distraction for your kids to get them to sit down and munch (eat) hehehe…

Closer look now.  The spring rolls as the name indicated is long and filled with prawn paste which gives it a good crunchy chewy texture.  I can have the whole glass of this to myself but I need to keep space in my tummy for what’s next to come.

Canton is well known for it’s soup and when I was in Guang Dong couple of years back, I just fell in love with their soup.  Chinese family is ascustomed to having a bowl of soup with their meal and when this Arrowroot Soup with Lean Meat & Dried Octopus was given to me, I drank it all up to the teeny weeny bit.

Soup lovers will know with just a sip if the soup has enough “fire” in it.  This soup served in individual portion is large enough if you want to share.  Filled with natural sweetness of the arrowroot, lean meat and dried octopus, I’m definitely not sharing mine! :P   Soup is good for the soul and nourishes the body…

The next appetizer that came is the Shredded Chicken with special “ma la” sauce.  Looks tame but it’ has a subtle spicyness to it.  So watch out if you intent to feed your kid who’s not into spicy food.  The pickled cucumber is crunchy and best eaten together with the shredded chicken.

This “Gong Sik Sar Keong Kai” – Cantonese Chicken with Sand Ginger Sauce is tender and smooth.  Even the skin is delish!!  Remember to have it with the ginger, it’s all good.  Couldn’t help but to have a few helpings here.

Then came this Stir Fried Beef Fillet.  One look and it’s just normal Black Pepper Beef right?  WRONG!! for this dish has been infused with strawberry sauce.  Yes, you read it right – STRAWBERRY thus the name Stir Fried Beef Fillet with Strawberry Pepper Sauce.  Very unique fusion of black pepper and strawberry sauce.  I love love love this dish so much so that we ordered another one.  The beef fillet is very tender and you get to taste the hints of strawberry. The aftertaste of strawberry is not too strong thus it does not overpower the black pepper taste. MUST ORDER if you are dining here in Private Kitchen.  Don’t miss this dish!  You have been warned.

The Braised Chicken in Claypot goes well with rice.  Flavourful and tender meat.  See those two round blobs.  If you think it’s fishball you are so wrong hehehehe…. It is actually mashed potatoes moulded to a round shape.  Nice and soft, I like putting some gravy on it.

I’m a bit picky when it comes to Pork Chop for I’m afraid of its coarse dry texture.  This however is the total opposite as the meat is so tender and moist.  Just one bite and I’m happily chewing my meat.  Full of lemongrass flavour this is a good appetizer for me too :D

If you fancy something with a bit of sauce, try this Deep Fried Pork Ribs with Special Salad Sauce.  Again the meat is tender and moist.  I still prefer the dry version :D

Chinese chives (kow choi) is not a vege that everyone can relate too.  It’s an acquired taste :P   I will at times buy it in the market to cook it at home.  Just that it’s difficult to find “young” chinese chives and always ended up with “old” chives which is not chewable.  Private Kitchen Sauteed Chinese Chives with Dried Shrimp & Shredded Dried Cuttlefish is tender (young) and I love picking the bits of dried shrimps to go with the chives.

If you’re a Hong Kong fan, you’ll be synonym with the word “Typhoon” kekeke…  We were presented with this Typhoon Shelter Prawns with Chili and Garlic.  Won’t you just go “WOW WOW” again :P

The prawns are big and I enjoyed my big juicy prawns with the garlic bits (yah am a garlic lover as well…).  You can have this same dish prepared with crabs but please call to check if crabs are available as it’s seasonal.

After all that I didnt think I can stuff anything anymore but this Portugese Style Fried Rice with Braised Pork Belly and Seafood is too tempting.  Furthermore it’s Portugese style and the look is so different from the one I had in Macau which was fried with ketchup base.  So what else but must try.

I ended my meal and wind down my day with a flower tea.  Pretty to look at and beneficial to our health.  I choose the Jasmine Heart and isn’t it a lovely sight?

Private Kitchen caters to Private Functions as well as catering.  So do head over to Uptown Damansara Utama and try Private Kitchen Hong Kong Cuisine for yourself.  It’s a corner lot, located on the same row as HSBC besides Perodua.  This will definitely be on my list of my fav “Si Fong Choy”! :D
